Kids Love Reading Real Books

One of the things we try to incorporate as early as possible is getting kids to read real books. You really see how much more engaged they are when they have a real book in their hands and how accomplished they feel to be able to read it.

During the first week, we let every kid pick one book that’s at the GRL level the should be at by the end of our semi-annual tutoring sessions (Level F for first half of 1st grade and Level H for second half of 1st grade).

Over and over we hear from parents that their kid proudly showed them the book and often ask their parents to read it with them (even though they’re not actually ready yet).

We also use Scholastic readers, which are bound like real mini books and they seem to be much more engaged in those than with printed out readers or flash cards.

But when we bring out an I Can Read book or a I Like to Read book, they are really excited that they can read a “real” book from the library.

At the end of the day, while computer programs and apps can help, most kids just want to hold a book and read it and we help them do that!
